Karamaz Tomb Hidden Excerpt 6/8
A Deadly Rider
Tyhr held a finger to his lips and very slowly and carefully began to crawl backwards off the path and into the scrub and rockery that flanked the trail. Ganzario, less agile, had only just pulled his trailing leg behind a small outcrop on the side of the track, when the outline of a mounted solider loomed up through the mist.
The man was lightly armoured in a steel helm marked with the crest of Linhee and a leather cuirass and greaves. He had a double curved horsebow on his back and a full quiver at his belt. Although his bow wouldn’t be of much use in a mist as thick as this, the long handled axe that swung from his saddle would be deadly in the hands of a skilled rider on a battle-trained mount.
The soldier clopped slowly forward, his armoured head swinging from side to side as he carefully scanned his flanks. As he drew near to the small boulder that Ganzario hunched awkwardly behind, the horse whinnied and stamped at the loose rock of the trail with the steel of its shoes. The rider freed his axe and carefully guided his mount forward with his knees.

In the Fog
Ganzario felt more and more uneasy, but he did not know whether to fight or to flee. He didn’t know how to fight something he couldn’t see, or even which way to run; so they kept waiting. The sun inched higher in the sky, but instead of lifting, the fog became denser. It was unnatural. He opened his mouth to say exactly that to Tyhr, when the mist right in front of them suddenly coalesced into a strange shape. Only for a split second, but Tyhr had seen it too. They both snapped a wide-eyed glance at each other. The air around them stirred ominously and Ganzario shivered. Again the fog began to thicken right in front of them. It slowly swirled into a giant death’s-head, ten feet across, from eye to eye. Tyhr drew his sword and with a nervous roar, darted forward and slashed at it. The blade cut right through the skull, but it immediately reformed the second his blade had passed. The fog rolled back into a lipless grin and cynical laughter echoed all around them. Ganzario’s skin was covered in goosebumps.

Ambush!
They heard a loud hissing sound and before either of them could react there was an arrow quivering in Tyhr’s left thigh. He cried out and jerked around in agony. An ambush!
Ganzario immediately realised what had happened. He looked up in time to see a hail of arrows flying towards them from the brush on the other side of the road. Tyhr reacted first and dropped to the ground, but Ganzario froze. What happened with Blasmet flashed before his eyes and he stood there trembling, staring at the points of the arrows tearing towards him and wished it wouldn’t end this way.
